As part of the senator’s mandate conferred on him by then Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, on the advice of the Prime Minister and in accordance with the Constitution of Canada, Senator Boisvenu votes on legislation that becomes enforceable in Canada’s criminal justice system.

Before voting on legislation, he helps draft it, in particular by sitting on the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs and the Standing Joint Committee on Regulatory Scrutiny. In addition to considering draft legislation, he may also propose legislative amendments on issues of justice and security. The overall objectives of his mandate are to consult members of the public and to work to reform legislation so that it serves them better.
